The Athlete Abroad

How I Balanced Training and Studying Abroad as a College Athlete

Every college athlete dreads their conversation with their coach a few months before studying abroad — the one where they have to explain they will be missing three months of off season training. Which is why many students dismiss the possibility of international travel. As a former study-abroad student who was able to remain in shape for the next competition season, I am writing this post to show that it is possible to travel abroad and remain disciplined about your training.

I chose to study abroad during my junior year of college in Gold Coast, Australia. I left behind supportive teammates and a coach who understood my goals and encouraged me to chase them. But I was ready to switch things up. I was ready for a new challenge, the challenge of training independently.

As an avid runner on the cross country team at Saint Anselm College, I knew my training would look different abroad. It would require self motivation and mental toughness to continue to train every day without anyone to pace alongside or yell out splits.

But I managed. I made use of the University track, and gym, as well as the beautiful bike paths along the water for long runs. I coordinated runs around my travel plans, often taking rest days when I was visiting a new area.

I started to meet other students who were just as passionate about running and accompanied me at the track once a week for workouts. Three of us decided to sign up for the Gold Coast Running Festival to have a goal to work towards. I entered myself into the 3/4 marathon which would be the longest race of my career!

All this being said, it is absolutely possible to study abroad and continue to train for your desired sport. Griffith University Students have access to several facilities and fields. The College as an olympic sized swimming pool which is great for cross training days. It has outdoor basketball, beach volleyball, and soccer fields. There are also two fitness centers open to students for a monthly membership fee. If you need additional equipment for your sport, I recommend visiting Facebook Marketplace for sticks, balls, etc.

Lastly, there are many intramural sports you can sign up for. Be sure to attend O-week to find out more about what sports are offered! Griffith also loves contests. Just about every week there is a different type of sports contest. From basketball shootouts to ping pong tournaments, there’s something for everyone! Don’t hesitate to sign up for one, you may even win a gift voucher!
